72 pull type - 2009/02/16 05:06 Hi all I have a question about my 72 pull type combine. It has set shedded since 1964 and I bought it on my neighbors sale. Still has paint on the auger and the sickle sections. Went all through it replacing belts and lubricating and putting on two brand new tires as the old ones looked fine but the sidewall gave out from dry rot. Cost more for the tires and belts than I gave for the machine. Got to run it on wheat this summer 08 for the first time. Was running in 80 bushels per acre wheat and was too much for my B John Deere even in 1st gear. Switched over to dad's 720 diesel and it was okay in 2nd gear but in 3rd it was all that it could handle. Could not make one round on a quarter mile through as the hopper could not hold it all. My question is this: should it pull the 720 down this much? Dad had a 66 and a 90 back in the 60's and pulled them with the old 70 John Deere and never seemed to have any trouble, but then again we only had 35-40 bushel wheat per acre back then. It would make the old 720 diesel roll the black smoke in third but the combine seemed to be taking it well (never slipped a clutch)and was chopping the straw but I wonder if this is normal I see on You-tube people cutting but the wheat or oats are very thin. Thanks

Re:72 pull type - 2009/02/18 14:52 I have a 72, and it works great, but I would say the answer to your question would be, 80 Bushel wheat is a lot of stuff going through. If you cleaned the grain, and did not run anything overboard, you did good.

I pull mine with a d-15, and have to slow down in heavy crop. Other wise you will slug it, or if you have too much power, you will damage something.

Re:72 pull type - 2009/03/01 02:40 Thanks Norman:

I had hoped that the 80 bushel acre wheat was the cause. As always when an old AC Gleaner was set up right nothing goes out the side and only grain goes into the hopper. I got to get my scour-kleen put on and running. Wish I had a video of her in action but will work on that for this year!

Sincerely,
